Shallow swim*

I swam in tidal pools
with minnows,
mussels, and crabs,
broken starfish
missing limbs
and tangled kelp.

I watched crabs
hurry under rocks
spitting sand, burrow
with clams when
I reached down
and warm water drowned me
as I grabbed a tiny crab.

That day
I floated on a wood raft
from the shipwreck
where I dangled my
legs over the edge
the tall outsider.

A poem in imitation of Amy Lowell’s The Peddler of Flowers
